cheese factory to deep gap shelter

i’m way behind in my writing, and am having a hard time rembering all the details. another short day today. the four of us were the last to leave the cheese factory camp site. we hiked together for most of the morning but split up in the afternoon. it was hot and i spent much of the day wearing a bandanna to cover my ears and neck.

i arrived at deep gap shelter pretty early, but the shelter was already filling up. the weather for the night is calling for 2” of rain starting at midnight. i decided to take a spot near the door. others trickled in, as well as the rest of our little group. there was some negotiations, but eventually everyone fit. it was definitely like sardines. i was happy my spot next to the door allowed my head to stick out. we ultimately fit 17 people in the shelter.

we relaxed for most of the afternoon with me trying unsuccessfully to get caught up on writing. tons of folks rolled in and we had a grand time chatting with everyone.

apparently andrew got a trail me today, “spock” after saying “hike long and prosper” as he headed off from a water source.

eventually everyone went to bed, and as promised the rain started around midnight. the wind picked up and with my head in the door of the shelter i started to get wet. thankfully i have my umbrella and set it up to deflect the wind and rain.
